Netwoofing
Yesterday, LearnLing attended the Dundee & Angus Expo. It was fascinating to watch how different people communicated, interacted, and built relationships with fellow business owners and potential clients.
You quickly notice that people network in very different ways. Some move around the room with energy, introducing themselves to as many people as possible and keeping conversations short and upbeat. Others prefer to stay with a small group, engaging in longer, more in-depth discussions. There are also those who take their time before joining in, observing first and choosing their moments carefully.
These differences are rooted in personality and communication styles and the four colours. Someone with a lot of red behaviour might see networking as a chance to meet as many people as possible, while someone with green behaviour might look to make one or two meaningful connections. Someone with blue behaviour might spend time asking thoughtful questions, while someone with yellow behaviour who thrives on ideas may focus on big-picture conversations.
The way people network in person often carries over to how they follow up afterwards. Some will send a quick message or LinkedIn request within hours, keen to keep the momentum going. Others prefer to take a little time, crafting a personalised email that references the conversation and offers something of value. Understanding these styles allows you to adapt your own approach in matching someone’s pace, tone, and level of detail to build stronger, faster connections.
One of the most valuable lessons in communication is that everyone has their own style. Some people are direct and to the point, while others prefer to start with friendly small talk. Some thrive in busy networking environments, while others take a little more time to warm up.
When you understand these differences, you can adapt your own communication style to match. That small shift can help you form connections more quickly, build trust faster, and create more meaningful business relationships.
It was a reminder of exactly why we do what we do at LearnLing helping people recognise and work with different communication styles to improve collaboration, engagement, and results.
And yes… there was even a dog at the expo but I wasn’t able to get a read on the Yogi’s personality type…
